Introduction
First, let me take this opportunity to wish all our readers
a very Happy and Prosperous New Year in 2023.
Second, let me apologize for an absence of entries since
the last one in October.
The fact is, in 2022 we decided to move out of the Toronto, Ontario
area and back to the Victoria area in British Columbia. The distance
is a mere 3,400 km by plane, and that takes about five hours
flight time plus a 20 minute stopover midway to refuel.
Toronto-Victoria: The shortest distance by Road, 4,450 km
Now here is a little bit of background. As visitors to this site
will know, for about seven years we have lived in Richmond Hill,
Ontario. That was because we wanted to be close by to our daughter
Penny and her husband Don. But in 2022, the time came when they
found that looking after their large country property there was
becoming too much of an effort.
Indeed, they had always rather liked the idea of living somewhere
around Victoria, BC, where the coastal area is very attractive,
and the weather is generally milder. So they made a trip out west
to explore, happened on a home for sale that they liked, and bought
it. Et voilą, now all is set for a move out west!
Naturally, our next step was for Audrey and I to move as well,
but where to in or around Victoria? A little research in this category
and they found an Amica home for the elderly that looked promising.
Amica-on-the-Gorge, as it is named, sits on the corner of a waterway
that runs through the Victoria area. At the time, the place was
full, so we had to wait for over a year until our application came
to the top of the list and accommodation was available that met
our needs.
I can say that we are well pleased with our decision to move here,
in spite of the additional challenges presented by the Covid 19
outbreak.
The rest of this article is going to be about our move and what
it is like here at Amica-on-the-Gorge. Some readers may find it
interesting, even helpful, if they are contemplating something similar
at some time in the future. Otherwise, feel free to just skip over
the next few sections. Nevertheless, please go to the end of the
last section, where you can read about our sad family upset.
