How much time should it cover?

Typically:

An STP should cover 10% to 15% of the schedule for the current project phase
Show about 25% of the actual performance achieved in the previous STP
- To demonstrate continuity
Show about 50%of the ensuing period
- As a "look-ahead"
And you should start preparing the next STP
- About halfway through the current one
