Calming Ourselves After a Stressful Day

After a long and stressful day, there are several key things you can do to get yourself into a frame where you can relax and get a good night's sleep. This is especially if you have an overactive mind, brimming with all the things you have to do tomorrow.

  • First, it's important to establish a routine. I understand the rigors of life sometimes demand we make changes and push our bodies to the limit, but on regular days it is best to try and get to sleep and wake up at roughly the same time. This even extends to the weekends.

  • Second, switch off the electronics. Unless it's literally impossible to ignore a problem, switch off everything with a screen an hour or so before you sleep. The reason for this is the blue light emitted from electronics tricks the mind into thinking it's still the middle of the day, messing with the hormone production that leads to you feeling tired. If there's an emergency, keep screen time to a minimum, and if you need to really need to use your stuff, download a screen filter to adjust the color of your screen to a more yellow shifted palette.

  • Third, if you're going to find time for yourself to relax, it's best to do it right before you hit the sack. Light music, reading fiction and relaxation exercises are all great for slowing down your body's processes and getting your mind into a frame where it's ready to sleep.
