Recommended Further Development and Updating of the PMBOK® Guide - Fourth Edition

The output 4.2.3.1 Project Management Plan, that also belongs to the Planning Process Group, has been developed based on the planning outputs from other planning processes. This output is used as input in the executing processes of several knowledge areas, i.e. 4.3, 8.2, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 10.3, 10.4, and 12.2. Most of the processes that receive 4.2.3.1 Project Management Plan input and other inputs impact the following outputs of Project Management Plan Updates: 4.3.3.4, 8.2.3.3, 9.2.3.3, 9.4.3.4, 10.4.3.3, and 12.2.3.5.

After the above "Project Management Plan Updates" have been developed then these represent the current plan and relate to inputs for the Monitoring and Control Process Group. The output 4.3.3.4 Project Management Plan Updates, from Project Management Integration knowledge area, relates with "Project Management Plan" inputs in the following knowledge areas: 4.4, 5.4, 5.5, 6.6, 7.3, 8.3, 10.5, 11.6, 12.3.

Outputs "Project Management Plan Updates" from other processes, i.e. 8.2, 9.2, 9.4, 10.4, 12.2, relate also to the inputs of their respective knowledge areas. For example, input 8.3.1.1 Project Management Plan that belongs to the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group, relates with outputs 4.3.3.4 Project Management Plan Updates and 8.2.3.3 Project Management Plan Updates that belongs to the Executing Process Group.

By understanding the above pattern, we can see how "Project Management Plan" output/input relationships flow from project start to project completion per Figure 2.

The development process starts with output 4.2.3.1 Project Management Plan that belongs to the Planning Process Group. This output is the result of inputs to process 4.2, including input 4.2.1.2 Outputs from other planning processes that includes all planning outputs from the Planning Process Group. The output 4.2.3.1 Project Management Plan, relates to "Project Management Plan" inputs 4.3.1.1, 8.2.1.1, 9.2.1.1, 9.3.1.2, 9.4.1.2, 10.3.1.1, 10.4.1.3, 12.2.1.1 that are in the Executing Process Group.

Next follows the input 4.3.1.1 Project Management Plan that belongs to the Executing Process Group. This input is the result of 4.2.3.1 Project Management Plan that belongs to the Planning Process Group and outputs "Project Management Plan Updates" 8.2.3.3, 9.2.3.3, 9.4.3.4, 10.4.3.3, 12.2.3.5 that belong to the Executing Process Group. After this initial use of output 4.2.3.1 Project Management Plan is completed, the planning processes enter into the process iterated loop as shown in our Figure 2.

Then follows the output 4.3.3.4 Project Management Plan Updates that belongs to the Executing Process Group. This output is the result of inputs to process 4.3. The output 4.3.3.4 Project Management Plan Updates relates to "Project Management Plan" inputs 4.4.1.1, 5.4.1.1, 5.5.1.1, 6.6.1.1, 7.3.1.1, 8.3.1.1, 10.5.1.1, 11.6.1.2, 12.3.1.2, that are in the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group.

Then follows the input 4.4.1.1 Project Management Plan that belongs to the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group. This input is the result of output 4.3.3.4 Project Management Plan Updates that belongs to the Executing Process Group and outputs "Project Management Plan Updates" 5.5.3.4, 6.63.4, 7.3.3.5, 8.3.3.6, 11.6.3.4, 12.3.3.4, that belongs to the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group.

Next follows the output 4.4.3.2 Project Management Plan Updates that belongs to the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group. This output is the result of inputs to process 4.4. The output 4.4.3.2 Project Management Plan Updates, relates to "Project Management Plan" input 4.5.1.1 of the Perform Integrated Change Control process that is in the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group.

Then follows the input 4.5.1.1 Project Management Plan that belongs to the Integrated Change Control process in the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group. This input is the result of output 4.4.3.2 Project Management Plan Updates, that belongs to the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group.

After that follows output 4.5.3.2 Project Management Plan Updates that belongs to the Monitoring and Controlling Process Group. This output is the result of inputs to process 4.5. The output 4.5.3.2 Project Management Plan Updates, relates to "Project Management Plan" inputs 4.6.1.1, 12.4.1.1, which are a part of the Closing Process Group.

Finally there follows input 4.6.1.1 Project Management Plan, which belongs to the Closing Process Group. This input is the result of output 4.5.3.2 Project Management Plan Updates and planning outputs from other knowledge areas in the monitoring and controlling processes.
