Introduction

The Hwaseong Fortress is shown in Figure 1 and its location in South Korea is shown in Figure 2

What makes this 200-year-old project a good study candidate is the existence of its accompanying project report called "Hwaseong Seongyok Uigwe", and its detailed illustrations. The report itself is illustrated in Figure 3.

An example of the detail is also shown in Figure 3. This level of detail provided in the project report, coupled with an examination of the structure itself provides an excellent opportunity to study pre-modern project management. Interestingly, UNESCO inscribed this structure as a World Cultural Heritage in 1997 and inscribed the Uigwe document as a documentary heritage in Memory of the World program in 2007.
