Power can take many forms

• Formal authority

  • The legitimate right to issue orders
• Referent power

  • As a reflection of one's superiors or associates
• Bureaucratic power

  • Through intelligence and knowledge of the system
• Contact and network power

  • I.e. who else you know
• Reward and penalty power

  • Control over pay and promotion
  • Or ability to deny these
