Yes, in very simple terms:

• Use a light-weight methodology for a lightweight job
• Use a heavy-weight methodology for a complex job

• For classic, relatively low-tech projects

  • Use a logical, linear, "waterfall" type approach

• For medium to high-tech projects

  • Including software development
• Use a methodology that advocates an iterative approach

  • And planning from phase to phase
